Three of Cups
The number three is an important number from an occultist perspective, the interplay of the macrocosm and microcosm, a dualistic creative act that gives birth to something new. Three links us to the third card of the Major Arcana, the Empress card, a card of fertility and abundance, once again affirming the productive nature of the number three, the consequence of relationship.
Aleister Crowley named this card “Abundance”, a keyword that kind of nails its energy to the table. This card is elementally associated with water, so matters of the heart, how we feel emotionally. Given the relatively self-explanatory appearance and positive keyword, you’re probably gaining a pretty good idea of the meaning of this lovely card, and you’d be right!
However, despite the card’s optimistic vibe, there is a subtle warning to be heeded. For after a goodnight out, a rich meal with friends, a time of fun and plenty. As with all excess, there will be consequences. For life is like a ride through a mountainous region. There will be ups and downs, so significance to every action.
While we’re invited to get out there, let our hair down and have fun, we’re also encouraged not to overstep the mark, for we’ve all faced those circumstances when we wake up the next morning and think, what happened? Did I really drink that much? Why did I share my most intimate feelings or say those words, what was I thinking? A card that comes with a disclaimer, warning us not to overdo things or go too far.
Astrologically Mercury is in Cancer, an interesting one, so we need to be mindful not to allow our hearts to rule our head. Potentially a pitfall with all of the water signs, but particularly given the sensitive nature of this deeply spiritual and open sign. So have fun, but don’t allow your emotions to control your mind, as the time of celebration can quickly turn into a time of disappointment and regret.
