The Empress Card

Today’s card is The Empress, the womb of the universe. The one who gives birth to new life, new beginnings, the creative nurturer, healer and mother.

The Empress is often recognised as the archetypal mother of the deck, think of the perfect mother, and you’ll gain a pretty good idea what the energy of this beautiful card will bring. Someone who will sacrifice everything for her children. In many decks, she is shown heavily pregnant, while surrounded by fertile land, wheat at her feet and a horn of plenty, a symbol of abundance and nourishment.

Within this card we see a contemporary depiction of a mother and child, an image many of us will recognise, for she adores her child, like most mothers, she would climb a mountain to tend to her child, work tirelessly to bring food to the table, do anything to nourish and protect her offspring.

The arms of the universe are lovingly reaching forward to embrace you, to pull you towards her tender heart and envelop you in her love. Not a wispy gesture of endearment, but an act of deep intimacy, spiritual connection and compassion.

Perhaps you’ve been feeling a little low, vulnerable or tender, in need of a warm hand upon your troubled shoulder, a hug from someone you miss. The Empress is reassuringly standing by your side today, to bring you love, compassion and understanding.

Nature is a wonderful link to the divine mother, a way to re-establish our connection with the great goddess. You’re invited to enter the garden within, to visualise the warmth of the sun upon your weary head, the birds in flight, the bees passing by. It’s time to step aside, take some time to nourish and nurture yourself. Like the child within the card, know you are loved and cherished. Feel the gentle presence of your mother, as she holds you tightly within her safe loving arms.
